In this photo, there is a brawl happening between Americans and Irish immigrants. This connects to my topic because this fits into the Irish stereotypes. It is trying to portray the Irish as extremely violent people, when not all Irish men are extremely violent. This also connects to the adventures of Huckleberry Finn because Pap, Huck's father, is portrayed as a drunken Irish man.
In this photo, Jim is begging Huckleberry Finn for something. This connects to my topic and the adventures of huckleberry Finn because in the book, Jim is traveling alone with Huck, but he still feels like he must obey Huck, sole because Huck is white. Mark Twain is making Jim look like what any person would consider an African American man to be. Which is a stereotype.
In this picture, the woman is vacuming the home. This is an ad for the vacum. They are targeting the ad towards woman since during this time, the house cleaning and chores were for the women. This connects to my topic because it is a stereotype. It is going towards the stereotypes of women not being usful for anything other then cleaning the home. It connects to huckleberry finn because in the book, Huck tries to disguise himself as a women, and the women he is trying to fool throws a bunch of stereotypes of a women at him. Saying that a women wouldn't do the things he was trying to do.
In this photo, the African American man is trying to cast his vote. The white men are trying to intimidate him in to not voting. They are threatening him with weapons in order to scare him into not voting. This shows the connection between Huckleberry Finn because pap felt in a way disrespected because of the fact that an African American was in a better position in life then him. Also because the African American could vote.
Quote - "There was a free nigger there from Ohio -- a mulatter, most as white as a white man. He had the whitest shirt on you ever see, too, and the shiniest hat; and there ain't a man in that town that's got as fine clothes as what he had; and he has a gold watch and chain, and a silver - headed cane; the awfulest old gray - headed nabob in the state. And what do you think? They said he was a p'fessor in a college, and could talk all kinds of languages, and knowed everything. And that ain't the wust. They said he could vote when he was at home. Well, that let me out. Thinks I. What is the county a - coming to? ..." Pg. 39 - 40 Analysis - This quote is showing how racist Pap is towards the African American freed man. He is showing that he isn't ready for this country to come to a change. This quote connects to my topic because everything Pap was saying in this quote was belittling the African American race. Saying that they aren't even close to the level of a white person, who is able to vote and wear nice clothes without being questioned during the time of the Gilded Age.
Quote - "Next day he was drunk, and he went to Judge Thatcher's and bullyragged him, and tried to make him give up the money..." Pg. 32 Analysis - This quote shows how much of a drunk Pap is. He doesn't care about the people around him or even himself, he just cares about getting Huck's money to get drunk. This connects to my topic because Pap fits into the Irish stereotype. He is a drunk who is willing to do anything to get what he needs to stay that way, even is it means bullying a Judge into getting your sons money.
Quote - "You do a girl tolerable poor, but you might fool men, maybe. Bless you, child, when you set out to thread a needle don't hold the thread still and fetch the neddle up to it; hold the needle still and poke the thread at it; that's the way a woman most always does, but a man always does t'other way." Pg. 81 Analysis - This quote shows that the women is very stereotypical towards women. That she expects a girl or a women to act a certain way, or else they wont be considered a women. This connects to my topic because the women is describing the way Huck acts as if there is a certain way that all women act. That women are all supposed to act exactly the same way. The women that is talking to Huck, is conditioned to think that a women is supposed to do certain things, because of the society that she lives in.
Quote - ""Well, it's a blame ridiclhous way, en I doan' want to hear no mo' 'bout it. Dey ain' no sense in it." "Looky here, Jim; does a cat talk like we do?"" Pg. 103 Analysis - This quote shows that Mark Twain is trying to fit Jim into the way that people prior to the civil war would look at an African American man. He is trying to make Jim look unintelligent, as if he is less of a person then Huck. He is stereotyping against Jim, because prior to the civil war, whites considered African Americans as dumb, because their masters wouldn't allow them to learn to read or write.
