Diversity plays a big role in the social and cultural environments of the Gilded Age. During the Gilded Age, there were a lot of different ways that people were discriminated against because of how they look at what the did in their lives. The country wasn't that diverse during the gilded age. It was becoming diverse because the civil war was over and people had their freedom. The diversity between races wasn't really as prominent as it is now. The diversity was more seen through class. You would see the poor people living in the slums of new york city. The poor people were all kinds of races, from African American, to Irish, to Italian. The rich would live in huge houses across the country. The poor weren't treated as equals in society. They would have the jobs that paid less, but had the most hours. The rich owned the up and coming new corporations that came out of the Gilded Age.
Also, during the Gilded Age, there were many stereotypes put out towards people of all races, to make one races more prominent then any other race. They would say that the Irish were drunks, the African Americans were lazy and violent. There was always a front on society during the Gilded Age, trying to get people to think that America was becoming better, but in reality, they were pursuing the same practices from years earlier, just in different ways.

In the book, Twain emphasized the importance of Huck striving for social justice by having Huck not be afraid to voice himself. Huck also wasn't afraid to claim Huck as something more then a slave. Him having a relationship with Jim as a friend is striving for social justice. He showed that he truly cared for Jim, no matter what society viewed him as. He stayed true to himself throughout the entire story, to me, that shows that he is striving for social justice.
